MTSH Message from the Chair – November

November 25, 2019

Howdy, everyone,

Our Annual BBQ Social and Fundraiser was a tremendous success.  I would like to thank Melissa Wood and her committee for organizing and executing this outstanding event which enables our Section to provide scholarships to many deserving university students and supports various high school engineering programs throughout the year. This was Melissa’s twelfth year and we are immensely grateful for her outstanding service to our organization.  Melissa is passing the baton on to Wendy Post with Oceanscan-USA who brings years of experience with non-profit organizations including MTS Houston.

I would also like to thank Steven Thrasher, Jazman Alamos, Hal Peters, Maria Aleman and Jamie Sangster at Ashtead Technology Offshore for providing a wonderful venue for our event.

We had representatives from over 50 offshore companies eagerly showing off their technology, expertise and products to our community.  Several universities including Texas A&M College Station, Texas A&M Galveston and Texas A&M Corpus Christi, as well as, the Cinco Ranch High School Robotics Team attended the event.

Team 624, represented by seven high school students and their robot attended the annual MTS BBQ.  The Team 624 students were excited to show off their newest robot. It was a great experience and the students enjoyed demonstrating their robot and discussing FIRST and Team 624 with MTS members and many Vendor/Sponsor companies who attended the event.

Pictured below are the students and the robot with me.  Mike Outlaw is the team’s Mentor and President CRHS FIRST Robotics Team 624, CRyptonite.  Thank you and your team for attending, Mike!

We appreciate all the individuals and companies who donated items for our silent auction fundraising effort.  We had a variety of items including many sports memorabilia items for the auction.  I think everyone enjoyed the competition to take home a prize.

Last, but certainly, not least, the BBQ cooked by our cook team was delicious!

Thank you to everyone, including our MTS Headquarters IT and communications team, Monica Ostrander, Director of Programs and Kristina Norman, Deputy Executive Director & Director of Events, whose support to our Section made this event a tremendous success.

We are especially grateful to Melissa Wood, our BBQ Chair and LinkedIn Champion; Stephanie Rollins, our Silent Auction Chair; and Brian Bearden, our Facebook Champion to get the word out to our members, interested companies and many others.

Our next event is the MTS Houston Sporting Clays Tournament which is planned for Saturday, March 28, 2020.  Registration for this event is now open.  We hope you will mark your calendars and plan to attend this fun event.

I would like to note here that we have several openings to serve in leadership positions of the Houston Section. If you are interested, please drop me a line.

See you next year!

Best regards,
Teresa R. Sonne, PE
