MTSH September Message from the Chair

September 3, 2019

Houston has had a HOT summer with triple digit temperatures. Our volunteers have also had a HOT summer providing comments and input to our new website: https://houston.mtsociety.org/. We are ready for things to cool down a bit so we can enjoy the upcoming September Lunch, Annual MTS Houston Section BBQ, Young Professionals (YPs) networking event and start to take registrations for the Sporting Clays Tournament in March.

I am thrilled to let you know that we had 71 members and non-members attend our recent August lunch with Stan Bond of HESS. Stan provided excellent project execution advice to members who wish to work with HESS on future projects.

Additionally, we honored our MTS Houston Section Scholarship winners. Martina Khurana, daughter of MTS Houston Section Program Chair, Sandeep Khurana, was able to attend the lunch and meet some of our members before heading back to her university. Congratulations, Martina! We wish you the very best.

We are pleased to kick off fall with lunch speaker Aaron Davis on Thursday, September 26th. Aaron is the Offshore Operations Training Manager with Occidental Petroleum (Anadarko). He will present the topic: Competency Assurance for Oil and Gas Operations. We hope to see you there.

Please visit our new website (https://houston.mtsociety.org/) to find out more about the lunch or register now!

We are a non-profit organization therefore, payment at the time of your lunch registration is critical to our continued ability to award scholarships. When you make a reservation but do not pay for the lunch at the time you make your reservation and then do not attend and pay, our organization suffers because it has to pay for your lunch. Therefore, we appreciate your effort to register and pay before 5:00 pm the Tuesday afternoon before the meeting. Our volunteers work hard at our events to earn scholarship money to support our students and appreciate your help keep our costs down.

We are currently updating our distribution lists and adding new members to our organization. We recognize there has been a lot of turmoil in our industry and some members may be working for other employers now. Please get in touch with us if you have new contact information.

We appreciate your efforts to spread the word about our organization with your coworkers, friends and Clients. If you find someone you know is missing our newsletters, please direct them to our new website or contact Monica Ostrander (mostrander@mtsociety.org) who will walk them through the registration process. You don’t have to be a member to attend our events, but there are benefits to being a member.

We are also looking for more volunteers. If you would like to meet and work with some great people, please come see me or one of the other officers after the lunches.

Upcoming events you might want to mark on your calendar include:

DP Conference 2019 with an optional Workshop on October 14 will be held at the Westin Houston Memorial City Hotel, 945 Gessner, Houston, Texas 77024. Please use the following link to learn more about the conference and register: https://dynamic-positioning.com/

• The Annual MTS Houston Section BBQ will take place on Thursday, November 7. The BBQ is hosted again this year by Ashtead Technology Offshore, an independent one stop shop addressing all your equipment needs across ROV, Survey, Hydrographic, Geophysical, Environmental and NDT located in NW Houston.

The BBQ has become a much anticipated tradition along the Gulf Coast and attracts around 600 to 800 offshore industry professionals and their guests. It is also attended by approximately 100 students from local universities and high schools. And there is a special section for local high school robotics clubs to demonstrate their prowess with developing the robots of the future as well.

A silent auction with a wide variety of donated items and autographed sport memorabilia will be held at the BBQ again this year. The BBQ is the Section’s leading fundraiser of the year and money raised supports the Section’s vibrant scholarship and networking programs. Donations are welcome.

Booths are now available for companies who wish to provide literature or demonstrations at the event.

Please use our new website to register. Thank you!

We can’t wait to see you again and hopefully cooler weather on the 26th!

Best regards,
Teresa R. Sonne, P.E.
